The research conducted at the University of Tartu indicates that from October to the beginning of May, the solar radiation in Estonia is not intensive enough for the synthesis of vitamin D. A total of 73% of the people in Estonia suffer from a vitamin D deficiency in winter, whereas in summer the deficiency affects only 29% of the people in Estonia (M Kull, 2017). This is caused by Estonia’s geographic location at 59° latitude in the northern hemisphere and also by a low level of fish consumption.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. The generic term for these vitamins is colecalciferols, and the most common variations are vitamin D2 or ergocalciferol and vitamin D3 or colecalciferol.
